چکیده

We have measured mass transport of normal liquid He through an array of submicron diameter apertures in a thin membrane. As the temperature is decreased we observe the crossover from viscous flow to ballistic effusion transport by quasiparticles. In this ballistic regime the quasiparticle mean free path is large compared to both the aperture diameter and the membrane thickness, and the flow conductance is temperature independent. At lowest temperatures, this experiment provides an analog of the electronic ballistic point contact for neutral Fermi liquids. The measured conductance is in quantitative agreement with theory.

Fabricating nanoscale aperture arrays for superfluid helium-4 weak link experiments

Arrays of nanoscale apertures have been found to exhibit fascinating quantum phenomena such as the Josephson effect and collective quantized phase-slippage. To be in the Josephson regime, the aperture size must be comparable to the healing length of the He order parameter. For 50nm apertures this regime is attained ∼mK below Tλ. Collective phase slippage occurs at considerably lower temperature...

Concentrating light into nanometer domain using nanoscale ridge apertures and its application in laser-based nanomanufacturing

In this work, we investigate light concentration in nanoscale ridge apertures and its applications in nanomanufacturing. Optical transmission of ridge apertures in a metal film is optimized by numerical design using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. We show that ridge apertures provide an optical transmission enhancement of several orders of magnitude higher than regularly shaped...

Resonant Effects in Nanoscale Bowtie Apertures

Nanoscale bowtie aperture antennas can be used to focus light well below the diffraction limit with extremely high transmission efficiencies. This paper studies the spectral dependence of the transmission through nanoscale bowtie apertures defined in a silver film. A realistic bowtie aperture is numerically modeled using the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method. Results show that the tra...

Spectral resonance of nanoscale bowtie apertures in visible wavelength

We report spectroscopic measurements of transmitted field through bowtie-shaped nanoscale apertures in visible wavelength region. Resonance in these apertures and its relation with the aperture geometry are investigated. The near-field spectral response is also investigated using finite difference time domain (FDTD) computation and compared with the spectroscopic measurements. The dependences o...
